Description

The songs in this publication may be divided into four categories. The first is songs about daily life and rituals: Umakoti, Iqhude, Wandibizwe Umngoma. The Second is anti-aphartheid songs: Senzeni na?, Thina Siswe and Shosholoza. The third is celebration songs of the democratic election: Ibuyile iAfrika and Nelson Mandela (Usilethela Uxolo) and finally the fourth which is the song Ubuntu, a title and a song that sums up the South African philosophical notion of being connected as human beings.


Astrid Vang-Pedersen (www.astridvang.dk) is a Danish choral conductor, arranger, composer, teacher and concert designer. She is specialized in the fields of South African music as well as choral stage performance and dramaturgy. She works as a freelance teacher at The Royal Academy of Music in Denmark, and she teaches workshops both in Denmark and abroad. She is the former director of Papaya (www.papaya.dk) and now conducts Dopplers (www.dopplers.dk) which is an award winning ensemble performing a broad variety of musical genres. Astrid Vang-Pedersen is the initiator of Ubuntusong (www.ubuntusong.com) which is an intercultural musical collaboration project.
