This large-scale work, for voices accompanied by early instruments, relates the Massacre of the Innocents. Commissioned by the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles, it is due to be premièred in the Royal Chapel at Versailles in December 2020 (Christmas Concert).
Nuit reflects a reference work: Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s Midnight Mass for Christmas. In eight sections, it illuminates a poetic text that is sombre, but also full of hope.
The early instruments support the many voices – children’s choir, mixed choir, and soloists – with subtlety and finesse.
The emotion of the text is intensified by the instrumental colours produced by a finely crafted composition, in which the rich timbres of the flutes and strings are supported by the discreet but essential presence of a positive organ.
